example of tectonic plates:
The Indian ocean tsunami which occurred on christmas day in 2004 killed almost one quarter of a million people in 15 countries, and had the energy of over twenty thousand atomic bombs similar in size to the Hiroshima. It was a magnitude nine earthquake that occurred off the coast of Sumatra (an island in indonesia) in the Indian ocean. This led to a large amount of water being displaced, sending powerful shock waves in all directions, causing the tsunami. There were thirty metre high waves which flooded numerous costal communities: with indonesia the worst effected along with the Indian sub-continent region. This was due to the Sumatra-Andaman under sea mega thrust earthquake caused by the Indian plate being subducted by the Burma plate; causing the massive tsunami. It caused a six hundred mile rupture on the sea floor, displacing it by ten yards horizontally and three yards vertically; leading to trillions of tons of rocks being displaced. These tectonic plates have been pushing against each other for thousands of years and will go on doing so; leading to similar underwater earthquakes and tsunamis in the future.
Another example is the 2011 undersea megga thrust earthquake of magnitude nine that rocked northeastern Japan; again leading to a MASSIVE tsunami. The epicentre was seventy kilometres east of Japan, and the fourth most powerful in history. This lead to about eighteen thousand deaths and seven thousand injuries; with about a quarter of a million people having to be relocated. There were up to a million buildings partially damaged or collapsed. It also lead to nuclear accidents at the Fukushima nuclear plant. The Japanese population has been badly affected from radioactive contamination, disruption to there everyday life and a thirty billion dollar loss to their economy. The earthquake was caused by the rupturing of the subduction zone, located in the Japan trench; which separates the sub ducting pacific plate from the eurasian plate. This lead to about a three hundred kilometres long subduction zone tilting and thrusting upwards. Over thousands of years the pacific plate has been slowly advancing under the eurasian plate near Japan. The sudden horizontal and vertical thrusting of the pacific plate, from the earthquake, lead to the massive tsunamis. It was felt around the world, from china and Russia, to the west coast of America. Again the pacific tectonic plate movement hasn't stopped, and such disasters could occur again in the future.
in conclusion these two events are in the top ten disasters in our history. This shows that tectonic plates movement, and sea floor subduction are going on all the time, so such terrible events could happen to us again in the future.
